Wayne County Veterans Day observance moved

The Daily Record - 11/7/2018

WOOSTER — The annual Wayne County Veterans Day observance will take place, this year, in the dining hall at the Wayne County Fairgrounds on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m.

“It has been held in the pavilion, but it is no longer there,” said Jason Winkleman, chairman of the Joint Veterans of Wayne Countyveterans day committee. “It was torn down so we moved to the dining hall.”

The ceremony will honor veterans both past and present and will coincide with the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

“I know that Veterans Day is on a Sunday this year,” Winkleman said. “I know it will be tough for people to make the decision to come out due to church, but, we would love to see as many people there as we can.”

While the choice may be difficult for some to make, Winkleman said he felt that it was important to keep the date the same due to the historical significance of 11/?11/?2018 — exactly 100 years since World War I ended on Nov. 11, 1918.

The event draws approximately 150 people each year and Winkleman said that he hopes, despite being held on Sunday, that people will choose to come out due to the anniversary date.

Speaking at the observance will be state Rep. and Air Force veteran Scott Wiggam who will talk about his bill, the “POW/?MIA Remembrance Act,” that was recently passed.

The bill, which took effect Nov. 2, will require the POW/?MIA flag to be displayed at certain buildings operated by the State of Ohio on Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, National POW/?MIA Recognition Day and Veterans Day.

Wiggam said previously that the legislation is an act to recognize those individuals’ service to the nation and ensure that their memory and sacrifice is never forgotten.

The event will feature special music and speaker who will recount the Honor Trip that veterans took to Washington, D.C. earlier in the year. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided prior to the service and will conclude with the announcement of the Wayne County Veteran of the Year.
