Veterans parade will mark another milestone

High Point Enterprise - 10/27/2018

Oct. 26--HIGH POINT -- The High Point Veterans Parade will mark its 35th anniversary next month, and this fall the parade will take place on Veterans Day itself.

The parade will start at 3 p.m.Nov. 11 along Main Street downtown. Parade-goers will traverse the traditional route from the intersection at Russell Avenue to the conclusion at Montlieu Avenue.

"Last year, major construction on N. Main Street shortened our route to end at Westwood Avenue," said parade organizer Don Webb of High Point, a U.S. Navy veteran.

This fall's parade will feature approximately 100 entries and several hundred people, Webb told The High Point Enterprise.

"We will hand out small flags to spectators prior to the parade," he said.

The reviewing stand will be on High Street across Main Street from the train station. Any World War II veterans are invited to view the parade from the reviewing stand, Webb said.

"There will be chairs available for them. As always, we will have honor guards, military units, police and fire department representatives, motorcycle clubs, car clubs and civic clubs who desire to honor our veterans for their service," Webb said.

The parade was the brainchild of the late Jack Austin, a Marine Corps veteran who started the event by riding his bright red motorcycle up and down Main Street while carrying an American flag. Austin died seven years ago.

Webb took over organization of the parade with Austin's death.

"Please come out and line the route to honor our veterans and their families who have sacrificed to preserve our freedoms," Webb told The Enterprise.
