Johnnie Shiver receives state DAR volunteer award

Moultrie Observer - 3/30/2019

March 29-- Mar. 29--MOULTRIE, Ga. -- Johnnie Shiver, a U. S. Army veteran, was presented the DAR Outstanding Veterans Volunteer Award at the state conference of Georgia State Society Daughters of the American Revolution on March 22. He was nominated for the award by Moultrie's John Benning DAR chapter.

Shiver graduated from Doerun High School in 1944 as valedictorian and immediately enlisted in the U. S. Army. He served in an infantry division during World War II where he earned the rank of corporal. He served in the European Theatre at the Battle of the Bulge campaign and continued combat missions in France and Germany until the end of the war.

He re-enlisted during the Korean War but received a hardship discharge before he was deployed. He received medals for Good Conduct, European Campaign, Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge.

For seven decades Shiver has assisted veterans in a variety of ways, large and small, the DAR said in a press release.

Shiver was a driving force in soliciting funds and support for a community bus to provide bi-monthly trips to the VA Hospital. For many years, he has played Taps at military funerals and numerous patriotic events in the community including Memorial Day. Independence Day and Veterans Day.

Shiver was commander of the Moultrie VFW Post, as well as district commander, state vice commander, state commander, and national deputy chief of staff.

"Of all the service he has shown to veterans, Mr. Shiver would say his greatest accomplishment was in fulfilling the dream of an Eternal Flame monument to recognize all of the Colquitt County servicemen and women who willing gave the ultimate sacrifice to their country," the press release said. "Mr. Shiver and the Colquitt County Commission Chair worked to raise the funds for a permanent eternal flame monument inscribed with the names of Colquitt County fallen soldiers. The Eternal Flame monument was erected on the Colquitt County Courthouse Square and dedicated on July 4, 1976, as a part of the United States Bi-Centennial Celebration."

Shiver also assists in Quilts of Valor presentations, delivers fruit baskets to veterans in nursing homes, and assists with poppy sales and veterans' breakfasts.

"It was our honor and privilege to nominate Mr. Shiver for this award," said Nancy Coleman, regent of the John Benning chapter. "The judges of this award were highly complimentary of Mr. Shiver's service. Johnnie's legacy will live for generations."

State Chair DAR Service to Veterans Rachel Schmalz announced at the conference that Shiver was named the Southeastern Outstanding Veteran Volunteer. His nomination has been forwarded for consideration for the national award.
